Introducing the other half of this project, an Instagram account!
Following this post, the first Instagram post will go live which introduces the first topic i want to cover in this project: The stereotypes of Autism Spectrum Disorder seen in film and TV. Along side an article that gives a more in-depth look at these stereotypes. The plan is to release smaller, more ‘bite-sized’ look at the discussions I want to have throughout this project on the Instagram, for those who might not have the time to read the full articles, but also to open up to a wider audience as there aren’t many people out there these days who aren’t on social media in some form.
The name ‘Let’s Chat Representation’ comes from the origins of the project being to open discussion on representation, be it within film and TV, or reflecting the real-life influences that these kinds of representations can have. Since I wanted to create less of a formal space, using chat felt the right choice as it has become a signal across the internet as a relaxed form of communication.
With help from my incredibly talented friend @amethystartistryinc on Instagram, we put together the logo. I wanted to make sure that all the designs used for this project included accessible fonts and colour schemes to make sure that there were the least number of barriers possible, including using dyslexia friendly fonts, and opting for colour-blind friendly colour schemes. I used a really useful tool Coblis to ensure that the logo would present functionally within the different types of colour-blindness. The butterfly theme carries on from my original dissertation which presented a case study of progressive ASD representation, and a focal point of the case study, It’s Okay to Not be Okay was the presence of a ‘Nabi’ (butterfly in Korean) haunting one of the male lead’s lives. But as the story progressed, the butterfly became the symbol of growth and understanding between all the main characters.
